A New Card for WOW Embossing Powders

Hi and Happy Wednesday, friends! What a week this has been so far! If you read my last post, you know that I was blessed by being selected to be a guest designer for the Saturated Canary for the summer!  A new release is scheduled for today too so if you're as big a fan as I am, you'll want to pop over there and check them out!

Today, I have a new card I made for WOW Embossing Powders using a digi from another of my favorite illustrators, Phee McFaddell.  I haven't posted anything using her images for a while now so I thought it might be a nice change of pace for you guys.  I also used LOTS of WOW Embossing Powder.

This card is a whopping 6" x 8", at least an inch bigger all the way around than the cards I usually make.  And believe it or not, I'm working on one even bigger than this using a Saturated Canary digi!! Well, I live in Texas... what can I say?! LOL!

I actually intentionally made the card large because I wanted plenty of the patterned paper (from DCWV's All Dressed Up stack), as well as the dry embossed oval to show behind my focal image.

I started by dry embossing a piece of white cardstock by inking my embossing folder with Quick Quotes Pink Cheeks Powderpuff Chalk ink. The ink transferred from the folder to the paper during the process. Next, I used dies to cut the oval from the embossed cardstock as well as a pink and a black mat.  Then I ran a Versamark Embossing stamp pad over the raised areas and applied WOW Bright White Embossing Powder over the entire area. After turning the oval over and tapping it to remove all the excess powder, I used my heat tool to melt the powder.

I used Primary Ebony Powder to emboss the two flourishes which were made from chipboard with a Tim Holtz die.  I used the WOW! stamp set called "Gratitude" to create the greeting and the ticket and used a Shock Pink (RV04) Copic marker to color in the stamped and embossed images and fussy cut them to go on my card.

I added a mulberry paper rose, some velvet hydrangea blossoms from Petaloo, a glittery chipboard die cut from my stash and some pearls and Voila! A beautiful finished card fit for a queen (or princess, as the case may be).

Please visit the WOW blog to see some incredibly creative projects made by my talented teammates.  And if you're planning to attend CHA, don't forget to stop by the WOW booth and say hi to Suzy West and some members of the design team. That's it for today, peeps! Thanks for stopping by today.  I love reading your comments if you care to leave one.  Until next time...

Button It Up! Final Joy's Life Design Team project

As mentioned in my previous post, today will be my last post for Joy's Life Design Team and for this post I made a card using the ever-popular pirate theme.  Joy's fabulous You're So Punny stamp set was used for the greeting on the front of the card as well as the sentiment on the inside.  I have been planning to make this card for some time but somehow the theme never seemed to be appropriate until now.  We were asked to create something using buttons. I had this really cool-looking rectangular button that originally had a metallic copper finish and I coated it in WOW! Metallic Gold Pale Regular embossing powder and heated it with my heat gun.  It gave the button an entirely new look and it coordinated better with the cold accents I used on the card.

This swashbuckler is straight from the imagination of Phee McFaddell, one of my favorite illustrators.

I'd like to thank Joy for her generosity and for giving me the opportunity to represent her stamp company during this fun and fantastic time that I have been a member of this very talented group of designers and our dedicated group leaders as well.  If you still haven't tried Joy's stamps, I don't know what you're waiting for!  You'll love 'em!

Please check back on Friday for my third project for the WOW! Embossing Powder Design Team and in the meantime, you might want to check out the WOW blog and facebook page.  There is a new project posted every day of every month on the blog.

Until next time...

Happy crafting!

My first project for WOW!

Hi, everybody! Well, I didn't have a chance to post the extra projects I mentioned but I'm hoping that this one will make up for my very brief absence. I am finally ready to reveal my first design team project for WOW! Embossing Powders!!! I have been so excited about this new company and I am both honored and humbled to have been selected as a member of their first U.S. design team. You won't believe the talent of the other members of this international team.

I have always loved using embossing powders to add dimension and interest to my greeting cards but there are soooo many other ways to use them and Suzy West, the U.S. Marketing Director for Wow has developed her own line of absolutely delicious colors making them even more fun and adding even more creativity to your paper crafting! You really should try them.

For my first project, I wanted to do something completely different than anything I had seen being done by my teammates and other crafters around the web. I found a really pretty square acrylic plate charger at Hobby Lobby and thought it would make an interesting base for creating a 3D altered art project. I liked the fact that it wasn't the typical round shape like most of them are.

First I cut a piece of scrapbook paper to the size that would fit perfectly in the depressed area intended for the bottom of the plate and rounded the corners with my Corner Chomper. The paper is from an 8" DCWV stack called The Colorful Life, which was designed by Donna Estabrooks. All the pages in this little stack are very colorful and very artsy-fartsy, as I like to say. I'll be making another project with these papers that should be ready to post in a couple of weeks so stay tuned for that.

Next, I took the beautiful little fairy, which is a digital image created by none other than Phee McFaddell, colored her with my Copic markers in colors that would coordinate well with the background and cut her out. I stamped the butterfly outline from WOW's Build a Butterfly stamp set in Top Boss embossing medium onto white vellum paper and again on white cardstock in black Memento ink. I used WOW Earthtone Grape Regular embossing powder on the vellum and after heat setting it, I colored both layers with my Copics and cut them out. I mounted the vellum layer on top and added purple flat-back pearls for thebutterfies' bodies.

Then I added a rhinestone flourish in pale pink on the background and started arranging the flowers, most of which are from Petaloo, the way I wanted them before I began to adhere them to the surface. I made the turquoise rose from organza ribbon and glued a half-back pearl in its center. After affixing all the flowers, I placed the butterflies where I wanted them and Voila! I had made a sort of framed diorama that can be hung on the wall or displayed on a plate easel.

Be sure and stop by the WOW blog and see what my very talented teammates have created to inspire you to try this wonderful new line of embossing powders and stamps for yourself.  Monday is my day to post on the Wow blog and I'll have a cool layout to show you so if you love to scrap, you'll definitely want to check it out.

Thanks for visiting today. I hope you enjoyed seeing this little project as much as I enjoyed making it. As always, your comments are encouraged and appreciated.  And don't forget to ask your local scrapbooking store to stock WOW! products!

Until next time....

My first project as guest designer for Blog Quick Quotes

Hello and good day, everybody!  I told you last week that I had been invited to be a guest designer on Blog Quick Quotes for the entire month of January and today I am posting my first project created with their fabulous products.  For this card, I used my favorite of their paper lines, called Julie Je T'aime.  I love the varying shades of purple, turquoise, gold, cream and black that are utilized throughout the collection.  To me, it has a whimsical feel with a touch of elegance and pairs beautifully with the Petaloo Flora Doodles that were part of the awesome prize pack I won from Petaloo during their joint blog hop with Quick Quotes a while back.

This cute little fairy person was created as a digi stamp by Phee McFaddell, who as my regular readers know, is one of my favorite illustrators.  I colored her with Copics in tones that coordinate with the Julie Je T'aime papers.  I used the #300 paper (striped side) for the front and back of the card and #200 (the purple with turquoise swirly flourishes on the inside.  The part of the sentiment on the right side is created with silver glittered alphabet stickers in two different fonts.  I shaded around the letters with a light shade of tonal gray Copic marker to make them show up better on the background.  The part on the left was made using rub-on letters that I have had in my stash for so long, I don't remember who made them.  I cut the window with a Spellbinders die, which was a bit of a trick since the card is too wide to go through my Cuttlebug opened up.  The butterfly die cut is from K & Company, the "SPARKLE" on the front is a puffy sticker that I have had for quite a while too but I think the set is still available in stores.  I just don't recall who makes them.  The purple ric rac is from Michael's.  I think this card will go to my granddaughter, whose birthday is in March.

Thanks for stopping by today.  I hope you'll take a few minutes to visit Quick Quotes and see all of their awesome products and also their blog.  Their design team is incredibly talented! I'll have more projects including some scrapbook layouts and a tutorial later in the month so please check back on the 10th for the next one.

Before I go, I'd like to give a shout out to Rhonda, Lisa and the QQ Design Team for asking me to join them this month!  You ladies ROCK!  Until next time...

Happy crafting!

A right jolly old elf...

This is a late post for a Sunday night. I have spent the day shopping and doing laundry and I am worn out  but I didn't want to start off another week without a new post. Here's another Christmas card to encourage you to finish up those last minute cards you always need to have on hand for unexpected giving.  I will make my rounds to family and friends this week, delivering my special handmade cards in person.  It saves on stamps and I love to see the looks on the recipients' faces when they open them.

Here again, I have used an image by Phee McFaddell, one of my favorite illustrators.  It is one of my favorites of all her Christmas images.  Of course, I colored it with Copics in rich tones of evergreen, burgundy and gold, the traditional colors of the holiday season.

And now, I have a treat for you. In the event that you haven't had the pleasure of reading 'Twas the Night Before Christmas in a while, I am including it here. I think it's such a sweet poem and conveys perfectly the magic that is Christmas.

Twas the Night before Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

"Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away, all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

I'll have a couple more cards before Christmas Day arrives. Two of them feature another Christmas angel done in two different color schemes.  I can't decide which one I like best so I'll let you decide for yourselves.  Stay tuned for that one.

I also got wind from my team leader for the new DT that will start next month that a box full of product is on its way to me!  Yippeeeeeee!  I can't wait to start playing with it and hopefully soon after that I'll be able to announce the name of the company I'll be representing! How exciting! Until next time, have a wonderful week!

Happy crafting!

A New Paper a la Mode Challenge at The Outlawz

I'm so sorry to be posting this so much later than usual. It was my turn to post the Paper a la Mode challenge at The Outlawz and by the time I was finished with that at 1:30 this morning, I was really tired and not feeling great so I decided to turn in. I must have been REALLY tired because I didn't wake up until 10:35! Normally I would have typed this up ahead of time and had it scheduled to post at 3 AM. Anyway, enough of that drivel. I'm here now and I'll have this up in a few minutes.

This week our theme was Thanksgiving or Fall Harvest, but with a twist. We were to use a technique and tell what that technique was. I used this awesome image from Phee McFaddell and colored it with Copics.  It's not a traditional cornucopia in that it's all veggies instead of fruit and it's a basket instead of a horn of plenty.  If you'll look closely, you'll discover 4 tiny fairies too. My cornucopias never attracted fairies so I guess they prefer vegetables to fruits! If you click on the individual pictures, they will enlarge to show more of the detail.

The technique I used was to apply Diamond Glaze to some of the veggies to give them a sheen and also to add dimension and texture. The close up above shows the glaze on the Indian corn. This piece was the most difficult and took considerable time to achieve the appearance of individual kernels. First, I put a think coating of the glaze over the entire ear of corn. After that dried, I applied tiny droplets to the individual kernels but I could not apply it to adjacent kernels or the glaze just ran together to form more of a blob.  I had to let it dry thoroughly between each application until I had all the corn kernels applied. Then I went through the process again to build up the layers of glaze to make it more pronounced. I also used the glaze on the peas (but not the pods), the eggplant, bell pepper, tomato and yellow squash. All of these vegetables have a natural sheen to their outer skin so the glaze makes them look more realistic as well as dimensional. I also used a little bit of Stickles on the tiny fairy wings to draw attention to them.

I'm not going to list all of the products I used in creating this card but if you have any questions, please feel free to include them in a comment and I will be more than happy to respond. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. I have 6 cards and two layouts to make this weekend so I'll be plenty busy with the crafting.  Look for these new projects to be posted here during the coming week. Until then...

Happy crafting!

Never Kick a Sleeping Dragon!

Hello, all!  It's the middle of the week again and I have given my blog another spiffy little facelift.  Well, I changed the wallpaper and furniture out again, at least.  I started to go ahead and decorate for the upcoming holidays but I thought that my readers might get a little sick of it by the time Christmas arrives so I decided to go with a fall theme for now.  I realize that snow has already fallen in several regions of the country so it may seem like winter has already arrived to some of you.  However, it has been beautiful here lately!  I never thought I would be able to say that again during the dreadful summer we had but fall finally did arrive on velvet wings.  It has been cool at night and sunny and warm during the day.  No sweaters needed most of the time but we have had a cool snap already and another one is due to arrive sometime today or tonight.  I guess it's time to drag out the cool weather wardrobe such as it is.

Soooo... today I have a cute little card that I made a while back but never got around to posting.  This is one of those multi-purpose cards that I love so much because it can be used for a number of occasions or no occasion at all.  Sometimes I like to give cards just to let someone know that I value their love or friendship and this could serve that purpose too.  This cute dragon was is another Phee McFaddell design and I just thought he was so adorable sleeping with his pillow and blankie!  I have a couple of other images Phee drew that have dragons in them and they are for Christmas!  Wait until you see them!  I have not yet colored them so it will still be a while before I'll have them ready to post here but I thought I would give any of you dragon lovers a heads up.  Haha!

Isn't he a cutie?  He was, of course, colored with Copics.  The DP is adhesive-backed cardstock from K & Company and the sentiment is made up of alphabet stickers by Sticko that I adhered to white cardstock sqares and edged with chalk ink and then layered onto blue cardstock squares and popped up on foam tape.

I am entering this card in the following challenges: TBD

Thanks for stopping by today.  I don't know if I'll have time to post another project before the weekend when it will be time for a new Paper a la Mode challenge at The Outlawz.  Then next week will be the launch of the new Joy's Life design team.  Joy decided to divide her team into 2 groups and I will be in Group 2 so we aren't scheduled to post our first project until the 16th but group 1 will post theirs next week on the 9th.  We are all very anxious to show you all the wonderful things we'll be creating with Joy's fabulous stamps.

So, until next time...

A New card For a New Week

Good morning and happy Monday, all! I was supposed to post this yesterday but I got busy making birthday cards for my two youngest nephews and had to be at their party by 2:00 P.M. so I didn't have a chance to post it before I left and was too tired to do it when I got back so I'm doing it today instead. I'm not really sure yet what kind of card this is going to be but I love this image by Phee McFaddell so much that I just couldn't wait to color it and put it on a project. As you'll see, it's another one of those images that convey the elements of mood and drama that I love so dearly in an illustration.

Just to make things interesting for you, my readers, and me, I am going to ask you to leave me a comment and tell me what kind of card you would make out of this. I have the card made already. I just can't decide on a sentiment so maybe you guys can help me out in that respect. There's no prize for playing along. I just thought it would be fun to do something interactive. I'll use whichever suggestion I like best. So here ya go... let me know what YOU think about it.

Cool image, right? If you click on the photos, you will see them displayed full size. It took me hours to get the coloring the way I wanted on this one but it was well worth the effort. I used a glitter pen to add sparkly highlights to the halos around the candle flames as well as on the rest of the image to add a reflective quality. You can only see it if you hold the card at a certain angle which was what I wanted. This one turned out to be one of my favorite cards to date and it will be hard for me to part with it if someone likes it enough to buy it. I can always make another one but it would be difficult to replicate the coloring.  It was sort of an experimental project so I didn't take the time to write down all the colors I used.  It would have taken twice as long to finish had I taken the time to do that.

So what do you think? Does it "speak" to you like it does to me? If it does, I would love to know your thoughts and whatever suggestions you might have for a sentiment to go with it.  I don't absolutely HAVE to put a sentiment on it if I don't want to but if I can come up with one that is fitting, I will.  That's it for today.  I hope you enjoyed seeing this little gem and I hope it inspired you in some small way.  I'll be back with some other new projects before the end of the week.  As always, Friday will be my regular post for JustWordz stamps and Saturday is Paper a la Mode Challenge day for The Outlawz.  Have a wonderful week and until next time, my friends....

Happy crafting!

I am entering this card in the following challenges:

Lollipop Crafts Challenge #53 - No sentiment

Red, Black and Slimey Green Challenge at Crafty Sprouts

Note: Please scroll down to the next post for my Outlawz Paper a la Mode challenge project.

Hello again, everybody!  I made a card especially for the Crafy Sprouts Red, Black and Slimey Green challenge that ends today so I wanted to get it posted before the deadline.  Unfortunately, when I got to the Crafty Sprouts blog to post my entry, the challenge was already closed.  Anyway, since it's almost Halloween, I'll leave it posted anyway.  I love this image by Phee McFaddell and he was perfect for the challenge theme so I colored him up and put him on a card.  Of course, I used a Crafty Sprouts stamp from the Totally Witchin set for my sentiment.

Pretty hot-looking vampire, huh?  He's kind of a cross between the Phantom and something out of Vampire Diaries.  He sure was fun to color.  I'll still have another new project posted tomorrow.  I just had to get this one up before time ran out on me... little did I know that it already had! LOL

Materials and Supplies:

Base card - Core'dinations
DP - DCWV's Halloween and Fall stack
Image - Phee McFaddell
Medium - Copics
Flocked black Gothic border ribbon - We R Memory Keepers
Sentiment stamp - Crafty Sprouts' Totally Witchin stamp set
Red Glitter gel pen

In addition to the Crafty Sprouts challenge, I am entering this card in the following challenges:

Delicious Doodles #4 - Halloween, but no orange

Thanks for dropping by my blog today.  I hope you enjoyed your time here.  Until next time...

A New Card For a New Paper a la Mode Challenge at The Outlawz

Another week has ended and the weekend is here again! These weeks have been flying by so fast lately!  It's hard to believe that we're halfway through October already and that Halloween will be here in a couple of weeks.... then Thanksgiving and then Christmas!!! Yikes!!! I need to get busy on some Christmas cards! In case you haven't been here for a while, I have been making Halloween and fall cards and have posted several of them here. I have a few more too but most of them are already up.

It's my turn to post the Paper a la Mode challenge at The Outlawz this week and I have chosen the theme as well, which is Halloween/ Pumpkins. Because some people don't do Halloween, I didn't want to exclude anyone so I added the alternate theme of pumpkins so everyone can play along. I happen to love Halloween and have never associated it with anything other than a fun holiday when people don fun costumes and eat a lot of candy! LOL Some people don't realize that the origin of Halloween is rooted in Celtic history and later, Christianity. It is not rooted in devil worship as some believe even though superstitions were involved to some degree, even after it became a religious holiday. It is similar to The Day of the Dead that is celebrated in Latin American countries including Mexico.

Okay, enough of this history lesson! On to my project. I have made a Halloween card using two wonderful images by one of my favorite illustrators, Phee McFaddell. If you're a regular follower of my blog, you have seen many of her images before now. I love dramatic artwork and therefore, this image thrilled me to the bone when I saw it! LOL It was a challenge to color because I wanted to convey the mood I feel when I look at the illustration. Well, here... I'll show you what I mean.

The light shining behind he jack-o-lantern is not very accurately placed but I wanted a definite contrast between light and shadow so I placed the light source more behind the pumpkin rather than having it emanating from the hole cut in the top as it would be in the real world. That's called artistic license! LOL  I really love the result though so if you can look past the inaccuracy and just enjoy the effect, I think you'll like it better. As with a few other images I have colored lately, I have colored two different versions of this one. The other, which I'll likely post another time, is more dramatic still.  In the other one, I gave the female vampire fangs! Ooooooh, spooooooky!

Here are the details, in case you're interested:

Base card - DCWV Summer Dreams cardstock stack
Mats- DCWV Shimmer stack and Recollections black economy cardstock
DP - DCWV Halloween and Fall stack
Images by Phee McFaddell
Medium - Copics
Die cut borders - Sizzix
Gold ribbon - my stash
Corner punch - Stampin' Up!
Writing spots - Jo-Ann's in the wedding stationery section (these are actually note pads with magnets on the back for hanging on a refrigerator.  I love them as they are the perfect size for this purpose.)
Inside sentiment - Rub-on (sorry, but I don't remember who made it)

So there you have it!  Tomorrow, I'll be posting another dramatic card I just finished today.  It's not for Halloween but it has the same kind if "feel" to it.  I'll give you a little hing: it's another Phee McFaddell image!  I hope you'll join us for the Paper a la Mode challenge and let us see your Halloween or Pumpkin-themed project!  Until then....

I am entering this card in the following challenges:

Through The Craft Room Door #12 - Halloween with the color orange

A Brand New Paper a la Mode Challenge at The Outlawz in Celebration of reaching our 1000 member milestone

Hi, everybody!  In case you haven't been by here in a few days, I have been posting projects left and right! Between Friday morning and Saturday morning alone, I posted 5 new projects!!! That's definitely a record for me but I really enjoyed all of it except for the typing part. I took Sunday off to rest up and to get ready for all the posting I'll be doing in conjunction with the 1000 Member Party that's kicking off at The Outlawz tonight! Woo hoo!! I have been talking about it for at least a week now and the time has finally come! You really need to check it out because we are having some very fun games with fantastic prizes  in addition to the regular challenges and special party challenges and a blog hop! If I wasn't on the design team, I would definitely participate in every activity I possibly could. The $100 gift certificates donated by our fabulous sponsors, Oozak and SCACD, are well worth joining, not to mention all the other prizes donated by our very generous sponsors just for this celebration.

The theme of the Paper a la Mode challenge for the party is to use fall colors without using a fall theme. In other words, use a fall color palette but don't use a typical fall image or sentiment. I made a card using shades of green, gold, and orange with just a tiny touch of turquoise but the image I used is a fairy by Phee McFaddell, one of my new favorite illustrators, and the sentiment is for a best friend's birthday. So without any further delay, here is my card.

I don't know that it's my favorite card ever but I was pleased with the results, especially the coloring on the image. And here are the details, in case you're interested.

Materials and Supplies:

Case cardstock - Core'dinations
Glittler cardstock for mats - DCWV Glitter Stack
DP - K & Company Handmade Adhesive Paper Pad (4.75" x 6.75")
Image - Phee McFaddell (colored with Copics)
Lacy borders - Sizzix die
Dark orange miniature rose blossoms - Recollections
Greeting label - Spellbinders Shapeabilities (Fancy Labels)
Greeting stamps - JustWordz Everyday Sentiments
Tan chalk ink for distressing
Die cut shapes for writing spots inside - Nestibilities Labels Eleven die
Gold and white gel pens for detailing
Ribbon from my stash

So there you have it! I hope you enjoyed seeing my little card and I hope I inspired you to create your own project for our challenge. Don't forget to check out all the games as well as the other challenges and the blog hop will be coming up soon so watch The Outlawz main page for that announcement. Thanks for stopping by. As always, your comments are welcome and appreciated.  Until next time...

Happy crafting!
